ABOUT 'ART'-LOUD

‘Art’-Loud highlights the work of British artists who are socially or politically engaged in Manchester and its surroundings.

Throughout history, artists have always been influenced by social and political issues in their artwork and thus, engaged. Society evolves along with its challenges of the time, and, today, it seems to be more open-minded than ever towards feminism, minorities of all kind – especially sexual and ethnic -, or current environmental issues. If people would go to the streets expressing their anger or support to any given cause, artists would use their art to defend or denounce a cause they care about. Playwrights, illustrators, photographs, collage artists, poets, filmmakers… all contribute to the public debate by expressing themselves through their art about current social or political issues to engage the people.

About the author

I am Johanna Gayraud and I am a Master student of International Journalism at the University of Salford.

Along my studies, I have always been interested in arts. I am fascinated by the strong relationship between arts and society.

This website focuses on engaged artists who display their work in Manchester and its surroundings. I believe that arts, as diverse as it can be, remain the most efficient way to raise awareness over the most sensitive or the merrier topics to engage people in the public debate.
